Lily’s dad and Connor worked together to create the PERFECT surprise proposal for Lily! I am so lucky that I was able to be apart of that plan. When Lily’s dad first reached out to me about photographing the surprise proposal, I was stoked. He stated that Connor & Lily were going to be in Cashiers for a weekend getaway and that Connor was going to propose while they were there.
Connor REALLY wanted to propose during a picnic at Fairfield Lake! This was a special spot for Lily since her and her family spent summer vacations here while she was growing up. It was always one of her favorite spots!
However, they hadn’t been to Fairfield Lake in a LONG time so I went to scout it out for them since they don’t live in the area. When I was looking into how we could make this spot happen for Lily’s surprise proposal, I found that it is actually a private lake. Luckily, Connor & Lily would be staying in a rental that has access to the lake.
Connor and I planned to be at the lake around the same time so that I wouldn’t miss the big moment. I pretended to be a random person just hanging out, taking photos of the beautiful landscape. I kept glancing over at Connor & Lily while they set up their picnic and hung out.
Then, they got up to walk around and I knew, IT WAS TIME!!! So I quickly got into position when Connor got down on one knee. Lily was so surprised and had no idea that I was there for them!
After Connor proposed, we hung out and snapped some more photos. I surprised them with a bottle of champagne so we got some fun photos of them popping and spraying it everywhere. We truly had the BEST time! After that, they went back home and celebrated with family & friends.
Since Fairfield Lake is a private lake, you have to be an owner or guest of Sapphire Valley Resorts to have access to it. You have to get a pass that allows you access to the lake and the beach area. Connor was able to call ahead and let them know that I would be coming. So I was able to stop in and grab a pass from the rental office so that when I got to the lake, I just let them know in the boathouse that I had a pass.
Fairfield Lake has a beautiful dock with canoe, paddle boat and kayak rentals. There is a beautiful walking trail around the lake and they allow fishing. This truly is a great mountain getaway and the perfect spot for a surprise proposal.
The hours that the lake and boathouse are open do vary so make sure to plan ahead of time for your trip.

My number one tip for how to plan the perfect surprise proposal is by enlisting the help of others; family, friends, a photographer! It truly is so difficult to plan a surprise proposal all by yourself. You can delegate tasks to others and make sure that your partner has NO idea!
You also need to make sure that you have an idea of what would be special to your partner. What do they like to do? Is there a spot that is special to them? What would be a memorable way to propose? All of these questions will help you come up with the perfect plan.
Secrets are SO hard to keep, trust me, I know! BUT this is so important, you can’t act strange or give your partner any reason to believe that something is up. Because trust me, they will pick up on it! Act natural and try to forget about it so that you don’t end up telling them that you are going to propose. This is how you will ensure it is a TRUE surprise!
Hiring a photographer for your surprise proposal is a GREAT idea! A photographer will be able to help you plan and execute the perfect proposal. They will know all of the good locations and how to best make it a surprise. They will be able to bring and set up any props that you may want.
Not to mention, the nerves and adrenaline are so high during a proposal. You’ll barely be able to remember those few fleeting seconds. So that is where photographs are going to play a HUGE role in helping you relive those special moments. You’ll want to be able to remember it so hiring a photographer is a MUST!
