A Magical Engagement Session at Sassafras Mountain

Sassafras Mountain is the highest point in South Carolina, sitting at 3,553 feet. The hike to the summit is super beginner-friendly with paved paths and accessible trails, so you can take in the views without breaking too much of a sweat. On a clear day, you can see North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia all at once—it’s one of those spots where sunset views feel like they’re straight out of a painting.

If you’re reading this, you’re probably thinking about where to have your engagement photos, and maybe you want something scenic, accessible, and just… well, perfect. This post will give you a taste of what a session at Sassafras Mountain would feel like—why it worked so beautifully for Ryan & Rowan, and all the practical bits you’ll need (like parking, hike details, outfit tips, and more) to plan your own photos, minus the stress.

Ryan + Rowan

Ryan and Rowan’s story is one of those wild, small-world connections you can’t make up. Rowan grew up in Washington state, and Ryan spent his whole life in North Carolina. But get this—Ryan’s grandparents lived just three minutes from Rowan in Washington. She baked with his grandma and hung out there almost every weekend, completely unaware that Ryan even existed. Then, when she turned 15, she finally met him—and was instantly in awe. Fast forward, and the two of them packed up, moved to North Carolina, and have been happy as can be ever since. Their families were weirdly intertwined from opposite sides of the country, and somehow it all led them here.

For their session, they wanted something that felt like themlaid back, a little adventurous, and full of real moments. No big productions, just a gorgeous place and the two of them soaking it all in.

Sassafras Mountain

Overview

I love shooting at Sassafras Mountain because it delivers big views without any of the stress. Here’s everything you should know:

  • Trail and Access: The walk to the observation tower is short—just a few minutes and very manageable.
  • AllTrails Link: Here’s the direct GPS & trail stats so couples can plan: Sassafras Mountain Observation Tower on AllTrails
  • Parking & Permits: Easy peasy—drive right up, free parking, no permits required.
  • Tower Details: The observation tower is perched right on the North/South Carolina border (you can literally stand in both states at once), and the views span multiple states—just incredible.
  • Best Time to Go: Sunset here in summer is magic—soft, golden light, minimal shadows, and a sky that changes by the minute.
  • Seasonal Notes: Summer and early fall are safest; winter can close off access due to snow. And even summer evenings can feel chilly at that elevation—layers are your friend.
  • Crowds & Facilities: Unlike hotspots packed with people, it felt like we had the place to ourselves. Tiny crowds sometimes trickle in later, but if you go on a weekday evening, you’ll likely have privacy. There are restrooms in the parking area!
  • Phone Signal: Phone service is not great on the drive up so make sure you have it plugged into GPS before you start up. The drive up can also be a bit curvy (it’s a mountain road) so leave early and take your time.

Sassafras Mountain Hike

If you’re up for a little extra adventure, the Sassafras Mountain Hike is the perfect way to take in the scenery before or after your photos. Most couples opt for the observation tower because it’s so accessible, but there’s also a full hiking trail leading up to the summit that gives you a completely different perspective of the mountain.

  • Trail Overview: The main trail is about 8.4 miles round-trip with moderate elevation gain. It’s well-marked and winds through beautiful, shaded forest before opening up to those panoramic mountain views at the summit.
  • Difficulty Level: Most hikers consider it moderate—enough of a workout to feel like you’ve accomplished something, but not so intense that you need to be super experienced.
  • Trailheads: The most common starting point is the Foothills Trail access, which connects directly to the Sassafras summit. There are a few other access points if you want a shorter or longer route.
  • What to Bring: Sturdy shoes, water, and maybe a light snack if you’re planning to hang out at the top for sunset. Bug spray can be a lifesaver in summer months.
  • Time Commitment: Plan for about 4–5 hours total if you want to hike up, enjoy the views, and hike back down before it gets dark.
  • When to Go: Fall is absolutely stunning with the leaves changing colors, but spring and summer bring lush green scenery.

Even if you drive up for photos, hiking a section of the trail can be a fun add-on for couples who want a little more adventure in their session.

Sassafras Mountain Engagement Outfits

Rowan started in a comfy casual outfit—jeans and a tee—and then, under the observation tower, quietly changed into a dress Ryan adores (something she doesn’t usually wear). That switch was perfect: it looked spontaneous, heartfelt, and meaningful.

Why it worked so well:

  • Color & Contrast: The dress popped against the greenery and rock tones of sassafras mountain. Starting casual and adding something more elevated gave emotional and visual contrast.
  • Realism Over Perfection: The outfit change felt candid and intimate—not staged.
  • Preparation: She changed under the tower’s ramp (super low-stress). Any tight space works—just have a backup plan like a blanket, if you’re changing on the trail.

Future couples, take note: two outfits give variety without wrecking the simplicity of your session.

Best Time of Year for Sassafras Mountain Engagement Photos

Choosing the right season can make a huge difference in your Sassafras Mountain photos, both for comfort and the overall vibe of your session. Summer is by far the best time of year to visit this stunning overlook. The lush greenery is at its peak, and the warmer temperatures make it perfect for sunrise or sunset without freezing.

Spring and Fall are also gorgeous times for Sassafras Mountain photos, each bringing its own unique charm. In the spring, the trees start filling out with fresh green leaves, and Fall brings vibrant foliage and that golden-hour glow reflecting off the colorful trees — making for some seriously stunning backdrops.

Winter, however, is the most challenging season for a photo session here. The area can get icy, making the walk up sometimes dangerous. The drive up can also become dangerous and sometimes the road is even closed due to snow. If you’re hoping for a cozy, romantic session without the shivers, it’s best to skip the winter months and stick with warmer seasons.
