How to Have a Meaningful Elopement with Kids

When people think of elopements, they often picture just the couple, but for Ashley & Luke, their elopement with kids was a family-centered celebration that made their wedding day even more special. They embraced the adventure of eloping while including their four children, making sure everyone felt involved, loved, and celebrated. Their day was a perfect mix of romance, family bonding, and relaxation, all set against the stunning mountain views of Asheville, North Carolina.

Ashley + Luke’s Cozy Mountain Airbnb Elopement

Ashley & Luke wanted a stress-free, intimate day, so they chose a charming Airbnb overlooking the mountains of Asheville. It was the perfect spot to exchange vows on the deck, share a beautiful meal, and wind down in the hot tub and sauna under the stars. The private setting gave them the best of both worlds—breathtaking scenery without the stress of a big wedding venue.

Their Kids’ Special Roles

With four kids in tow, Ashley & Luke made sure their children played meaningful roles in their elopement. Their middle daughter was in charge of the rings, while their oldest daughter held Ashley’s bouquet. All three daughters wore matching white dresses, which made for the sweetest family photos! Their youngest daughter, just three years old, needed some extra attention, but having Ashley’s mom there was a game-changer. The Airbnb’s game room was also a hit for keeping the older kids entertained throughout the evening.

The Perfect Elopement Vendors

Even though this was a small, intimate elopement, Ashley & Luke still wanted a beautiful setup and an amazing meal to celebrate. They worked with Contentment Floral Design for florals that added an elegant, natural touch to their day. Ashley’s hair & make up was done by Locks & Lashes. They also had an amazing officiant that made the whole ceremony feel seamless. Their dinner was catered by Smash Events, making it effortless to enjoy a delicious meal without worrying about cooking or cleanup. And their cake was made by the incredible Sea of Sweets bakery.

Ending the Night in the Hot Tub

One of the best parts of their elopement was how they ended their day—relaxing together as a family. After dinner, they soaked in the hot tub and warmed up in the sauna, a perfect way to unwind and reflect on the day’s moments. (Pro tip: If you’re eloping at an Airbnb, choosing one with a hot tub is always a win!)

How to Make Your Elopement with Kids Meaningful

If you’re eloping with kids, you have the chance to create a truly special experience that they’ll remember forever. Here are some meaningful ways to include them in your big day:

1. Write Personalized Vows to Your Kids

In addition to exchanging vows with each other, consider writing special vows to your children. This can be a promise to always support them, love them, and make them part of your journey as a family.

2. Have a Family Unity Ceremony

A unity ceremony is a beautiful way to symbolize the blending of your family. Some ideas include:

  • A sand ceremony, where each family member pours different-colored sand into a jar
  • A handfasting ceremony, where all of your hands are wrapped together with ribbons
  • A candle-lighting ceremony, where each child gets their own candle to light

3. Let the Kids Exchange Gifts

Having small gifts for your kids can make them feel extra special. You could give them engraved jewelry, a book with a heartfelt note inside, or even a small photo album of your journey as a family.

4. Include a Fun Activity Just for Them

Plan an activity that your kids will love, whether it’s a nature walk, a scavenger hunt, or a fun game. This keeps them engaged and excited throughout the day.

How to Prepare Your Kids Emotionally

Eloping is a big change for kids, especially if they’re used to traditional wedding ideas. Preparing them emotionally can help them feel included and excited:

1. Talk About the Plan in Advance

Let your kids know what to expect—where you’re going, what will happen, and why eloping is special. Keep the conversation positive and emphasize that this is a day for the whole family to celebrate love.

2. Get Them Involved in the Planning

Ask for their input on small details, like picking out their outfits, helping choose the flowers, or deciding on a fun family activity to do after the ceremony.

3. Reassure Them That the Day is About Family

Some kids might worry about missing out on a big traditional wedding. Reassure them that this elopement is about celebrating as a family, and they’re a big part of it.

Tips for Planning an Elopement with Kids

If you’re thinking about eloping with your children, here are some tips to make the experience fun, meaningful, and stress-free:

Give Them Special Roles

Involving your kids in the ceremony makes them feel like an important part of the day. Some ideas include:

  • Ring bearer or bouquet holder
  • Reading a short note or poem
  • Handing you the vows
  • Helping with a unity ceremony (like sand pouring or handfasting)

Plan Around Their Needs

Elopement days can be long, so consider:

  • Nap schedules for younger kids
  • Snacks and drinks to keep them happy
  • Breaks for playtime so they don’t get overwhelmed

Choose a Kid-Friendly Location

A private Airbnb like Ashley & Luke’s was ideal because it had space for the kids to play and relax. Other great options include:

  • Beaches where they can run around
  • National parks with easy trails
  • Venues with designated kids’ areas

Keep Them Entertained

Having something fun for the kids ensures they enjoy the day too! Some ideas:

  • A small activity kit with coloring books and toys
  • A game room or playground at the Airbnb
  • A fun surprise like a s’mores station or movie night after the ceremony

Capture the Moments

Elopements with kids are full of candid, emotional moments. As a photographer, I love documenting these interactions—whether it’s a sweet hug during the vows or a silly dance party afterward. Let them be themselves, and you’ll get the most authentic, beautiful memories.

End the Day with Family Time

Just like Ashley & Luke did, plan a special way to wrap up the day:

  • A cozy dinner together
  • Watching the sunset
  • Relaxing in a hot tub or by the fire

Be Flexible and Expect the Unexpected

Kids can be unpredictable, and that’s okay! If they get tired, need a break, or have a meltdown, go with the flow. Keeping a relaxed mindset will help everyone enjoy the day without stress.

What to Pack for an Elopement with Kids

Packing for an elopement with kids can feel overwhelming, but having the right essentials will make the day smoother. Here’s a checklist to help:

  • Clothes & Accessories: Formal outfits for the ceremony, comfy clothes for after, extra layers for unpredictable weather
  • Snacks & Drinks: Quick, easy snacks that won’t make a mess
  • Toys & Entertainment: Coloring books, small games, or a tablet for quiet time
  • Comfort Items: Favorite stuffed animals, pacifiers, or blankets for younger kids
  • Emergency Kit: Band-aids, wipes, sunscreen, and any necessary medications

Eloping with kids may require extra planning, but it also makes your wedding day incredibly special. Ashley & Luke’s elopement proved that with the right mindset, a little flexibility, and thoughtful planning, you can have a stress-free and meaningful wedding day that includes your whole family.

If you’re considering an elopement with kids, I’d love to help make it an unforgettable experience! Let’s create a day that feels true to you, filled with love, adventure, and family moments you’ll cherish forever.
